    UAE PUSH BACK AFGHANISTAN

If there was ever a good time for Afghanistan to face the ACC Trophy Elite champions UAE, it was today at the Bayuemas Oval, the day after UAE's 29-run defeat to Saudi Arabia. It had been the UAE's first ACC Trophy defeat in eight years. Afghanistan, the rising stars of world cricket, had a great chance to assert themselves in a match, which if they had won would have truly upset the Asian tournament cricket hierarchy.

Afghanistan came close, UAE even helped them, but in the end just that extra little bit of experience and match-savvy saw the UAE home by three wickets.

UAE batsmen Mohammed Tauqir (foreground) and Zahid Shah shared a 29-run partnership for the eight-wicket to see their side home

Batting first and at 173 for 3 in the 38th over, Afghanistan were in line for a score of 250 which, on a wicket which was helping the bowlers would have seriously tested the UAE. But then UAE's captain Khurram Khan had the impressive Noor Ali Noori caught and bowled and then just three runs later ran out Samiullah Shenwari. The wheels fell off the Afghanistan train, and Khurram with fellow spinners Shadeep Silva, Mohammad Tauqir and the impressive young Riaz Khalid set upon the remaining Afghan batsmen like perspiration on a humid day. In little more than ten overs Afghanistan lost seven wickets for just 41 runs.

Tauqir confirms his dismissal of Nabi

They know what to do in pretty much any situation, do the UAE such is their experience. Talent-wise Afghanistan are very close, but they have still to know how to win enough of the 50-50s in a match. Point in case: Mohammad Nabi after hitting a huge six over long-on, goes to repeat the shot only to find a fired-up Tauqir firing one in faster which castles him. Nabi had made 40 off 41 at that stage.

He had made batting look very easy, as had his captain Nowroz Mangal earlier. Opening the Afghan innings he played some terrific strokes on the up square of the wicket, dispatching the ball with clinical ferocity. He was run-out by a whisker by Riaz Khalid from mid-off in the 23rd over, "which stopped him getting 150" said the UAE manager Mazhar Khan.

    Nowroz Mangal

Afghanistan's 214 was at least 30 runs below par. The way Mohammad Iqbal and Arshad Ali started the UAE reply it looked about 130 below par. Such crisp, powerful driving off the front foot - punch and timing from Arshad, through-the-line flamboyance from Iqbal - cannot have been seen at this ground for a long time. The Afghan opening bowlers were fast and found swing - Iqbal falling to a beauty from Daulat Ahmadzai which left him - but Arshad, then the left-handed Amjad Ali (Daulat did struggle with the left-hand right-hand combination) and then Saqib Ali played some terrific strokes against the pace and had the UAE scoring at over five an over throughout the first hour.

All day the wicket helped spinners who push it through all day and Amjad and Saqib both fell to deliveries which skidded through. WIth Saqib's dismissal UAE were 86 for 3 after 18 overs with the game in the balance. It was then that Afghanistan, while attacking as ever, made it too easy for the UAE batsmen Arshad and Khurram. A walkable single to long-off or long-on was always there for the taking and even though only one boundary was hit for 122 deliveries - while the UAE score went from 69 to 155 - the UAE were never under any pressure to keep up with the required run-rate. Khurram did give half a chance in hitting his six, the fielder on the midwicket boundary having the ball bounce out of his outstretched over the rope but he, like Arshad scotched any and all Afghan threats with their simple play-each-ball-on-its-merits philosophy.

Arshad Ali drives a Hamid Hassan delivery

The UAE throughout were under little pressure with their running; in contrast, the Afghans had to hustle for pretty much every run. With experience will come more adept field-placings but the Afghans have shown a different batting -style to previous tournaments. Here, they kept the ball along the ground and were happy to take ones and twos, as opposed to just being happy with fours and sixes.

The game was drifting away from Afghanistan and had it not been for one too languid drive by Khurram with the score on 168 in the 39th over, perhaps thinking the game was pretty much won already, Afghanistan were nowhere near to defending their 214. Khurram fell, then Shadeep Silva (run out as much by Arshad as Karim Sadiq), then Shoib Sarwar off a top-edged pull and suddenly at the start of the 44th over, UAE were six down with 27 still wanted. Two balls later, coming down the wicket, Arshad found the ball squeezing below his bat and knocking off the bails. Game on.

Arshad Ali falls for 68, Hamid Hassan celebrates

Afghanistan were doing what Pakistan used to do back in the day: not put up much of a score, then let the game drift away from them for all their bowlers' efforts only to find themselves suddenly roused with defeat staring them in the face and then going full-on for victory. Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram would see them home so many times on those occasions, today, as much as Karim Sadiq with his off-spin tried (after he'd kept wicket for the first 22 overs), Afghanistan couldn't quite get past Mohammad Tauqir. He came in with 38 wanted and simply played the right shots at the right times. His undefeated 24 off 14 deliveries took a nervy UAE home.

"We were at 60% today," said the UAE coach Vasbert Drakes afterwards, "there's still plenty for us to work on but it's a win against a good team and we can go forward from here." Afghanistan's coach Taj Malik felt his team had lost the game with their batting, "We were definitely looking to get 250-plus but somehow we could not manage it. Our team is the equal of the UAE in many ways and I think we are able to give them a good fight almost until the end." They still look a team which hasn't quite found its best line-up or tactical range. When they do, they will be able to seriously challenge even a UAE team at 100%.

    ACC Trophy Elite 2008
    Malaysia v Afghanistan

    AFGHANISTAN REGROUP

Afghanistan won a convincing victory against a rapidly improving Malaysia – Malaysia, a much better side than in recent years thanks to their new coach Romesh Kaluwitharana, new positive attitude and new work ethic. Afghanistan though, have been making their own strides forward since the last ACC Trophy in 2006 where they were semi-finalists.

Afghanistan's Nowroz Mangal apart from being an exceptional player has the great fortune as a captain to win important tosses and in doing so today he was able to take advantage of the Selangor Turf Club wicket at its best. He and opening partner Karim Sadiq put on 123 in 22 overs hitting the ball to all parts of the ground, with considerable power and occasional finesse, off the front and back foot. They did give two chances but Malaysia were unable to hold on.

After their dismissals it was a question of damage limitation for the Malaysian bowlers. The wicket started to help the slower bowlers and Dinesh Muthuraman ( 4-49 ) and Eszrafiq Azis put quite a bit of pressure on the Afghan batsmen who still aren't totally convincing against spin-bowling. Had Malaysia's fielding been sharper, Afghanistan would have really struggled. Four more chances were dropped and three run-out opportunities were spurned.

    Nabi is bowled by Muthuraman

Missing the services of Anwar Arrudin's pace-bowling and having to make up his overs with spinners actually proved to be an asset to Malaysia. Afghanistan's 263 could have and should have been more but they did not trust themselves to play freely against Malaysia's slow men. The innings lurched and lumbered forward rather than progressively gather momentum.

Dinesh Muthuraman gets one to bite and turn

Taj Malik, their wily coach, tried to play down his teams fallibility against spin by saying, "We came up with the right combination in batting today and we handled the situation very well. The boys played tactical cricket and you will have seen we kept the ball on the ground far more than before." Afghanistan did though, hit eight sixes. Malaysia hit none, but by the afternoon the wicket was keeping low and Afghanistan's bowlers kept the batsmen pinned down.

    Hamid Hassan bowls Suhan Kumar

Going in to bat Malaysia were bogged down from the start thanks to Afghanistan's new-ball attack. Hamid Hassan (2-15) came on and started to bowl at extreme pace, (he is the fastest bowler in the tournament) Malaysia fell seriously behind in the required run-rate. There just weren't enough boundaries for Malaysia during the PowerPlays.

    Nasir Ali gets one through

But is leg-before to Hasti Gul soon after

Nor when the spinners came on, were Malaysia able to rotate the strike frequently enough. The game was slipping away from Malaysia well before the half way point with the required run-rate already at seven an over. A 50-run fifth-wicket partnership in nine overs between Azis and Krishnamurthi gave Malaysia some hope, every run being cheered by the hundred strong Malaysian supporters. Azis and Madhavan actually put some pressure on Afghanistan for the first time in the match.

The moment Mangal (5-24) brought himself on into the attack in the 39th over, Azis fell. Mangal with his canny off-spin reasserted Afghanistan's hold on the match. Malaysia's tail was unable to offer any resistance to him.

Following defeat by the UAE, "Afghanistan are back on track in this tournament," said Taj Malik. Having played two matches each, all teams in Group A have one win.

    ACC Trophy Elite 2008
    Afghanistan v Saudi Arabia

    AFGHANISTAN BLAST PAST SAUDI ARABIA

    Noor Ali Noori
A scorching hot day at Kinrara and a scorching hot innings from Afghanistan’s Noor Ali Noori saw Afghanistan put themselves in with a chance to qualify for the ACC Trophy Elite semi-finals.
On a good sporting wicket, Saudi Arabia had no hesitation in choosing to bat first. However, next to the UAE in the competition, Afghanistan have the best opening bowlers. With Daulat Ahmadzai and Hasti Gul moving the ball both ways off the deck at pace, Saudi Arabia?s top-order struggled. Behind them Hamid Hassan found terrific lift and carry. Saudi Arabia’s captain Sarfraz Ahmed carefully rebuilt the innings with Abid Naseem but with Ahmed’s departure, caught behind, Afghanistan were back on top.

Saudi Arabia were 97 for 6 in the 33rd over when Afghanistan let the Saudis back into the game. Afghanistan invariably make winning harder for themselves than it needs to be. The difference between Afghanistan and teams like Nepal and the UAE in the field become most apparent at times like these – Roy Dias, the most successful coach in ACC competition once said, “when you have the knife in someone, that is the time to turn the handle” – Afghanistan let their grip slide.

Abid Naseem goes over the top

Naseem was on 22 off 63 deliveries, well set, when the sixth Saudi wicket fell and the field he had – with four on the boundary – was repeated for the new batsman Hussain Anwar. No pressure was put on the new man. It was as if the Afghans thought of victory as a foregone conclusion. It is at the start and end of matches the Afghans are the most alert, in between, they let the game run its course rather than run the game on the course they would like. Tactical naiveté plays a part in handicapping Afghanistan. It can only cost them as the opposition gets tougher in the remainder of the competition and in the ICC World Cricket League.

    Mohammad Nabi bowls Mohammad Amjad

Naseem finished on 67 (102 balls, 6 fours, 1 six), dropped twice in the deep after he’d passed 50. On a good batting track 172 wasn’t going to be enough but with Karim Sadiq and then Shafiqullah Shafaq self-destructing to catches in the deep, at one stage it looked as if Saudi Arabia just might get something out of the match. When Nowroz Mangal after a typically classy 55 (60 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) toe-ended a pull to backward square-leg there was just a chance that Saudi Arabia’s spinners could turn the match their way. Had Noor Ali Noori been held by the wicket-keeper off a thin edge from the off-spinner Hussain Anwar when he was 12, the game would have become very interesting.

Noori gave one more chance at 66, to long-on, but in between he'd played very soundly, with grace and power, to take his side home.
