KABUL, Afghanistan- Suspected Taliban gunmen kidnapped and hanged a pro-government tribal leader in southern Afghanistan, an official said Saturday, describing the latest killing of an ally of President Hamid Karzai.

More than 630 soldiers from the Virginia Army National Guard are scheduled to return to the United States today after nearly five months in Afghanistan.
They are to arrive first at Fort Bragg, N.C., in two transport aircraft, then remain for processing before returning to their armories, mainly in Northern Virginia, late next week.

It is the largest returning force of Virginia Guard members to come home this year, according to Lt. Col. Chester C. Carter III, a spokesman for the Virginia Guard.

KABUL, Afghanistan - Fighting raged across southern Afghanistan o­n Sunday as the U.S. military pounded suspected Taliban positions with airstrikes that killed as many as 20 militants along a narrow mountain footpath.

KANDAHAR: Twenty-two Afghans, most of them militants, were killed and six US soldiers injured in the latest attacks linked to the country�s former Taliban regime, officials said o­n Monday.

Militants from the Taliban attacked a district in Helmand province early Monday, a provincial government spokesman said. "Taliban attacked Washer district at 2:30 am and killed the district governor Mullah Sakhi and o­ne policeman," Mohammad Wali told AFP.

KABUL, June 9: Italian hostage Clementina Cantoni was released o­n Thursday after an ordeal lasting more than three weeks and without any ransom being paid, Afghanistan�s interior minister said.�I am pleased to announce this evening that we were able to release Clementina, who was taken hostage 24 days ago,� Interior Minister Ali Ahmed Jalali told reporters at a hastily arranged late-night press conference.

Two Afghans were killed and 33 others wounded in violent protests against a local official in the war-shattered country's north-east, local authorities said.

NATO-led peacekeeping forces said they sent out two F-16 fighter jets to the scene of the demonstrations in Rustaq district of remote Takhar province.

KABUL, May 30: A bicycle bomb targeting a Nato-led vehicle exploded near Kabul o­n Monday, wounding seven Afghans, hours after a rocket was fired at the peacekeeping force�s headquarters in the capital.The twin attacks, which caused no casualties among members of the 8,300-strong International Security Assistance Force, or ISAF, highlighted the deteriorating security situation in Kabul.The remote-controlled bomb was set o­n a bicycle left o­n the side of the main road from Kabul to eastern Jalalabad city.

WASHINGTON (AFP) -- Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai called Tuesday for an agreement to reinforce non-interference and cooperation among his neighbors in a bid to boost trade and economic growth in the troubled region.

Fresh from signing a pact for long-term U.S. military presence in Afghanistan, Karzai said although his country and several of its neighbors had pledged not to meddle in each other's affairs, a formal pact to stress noninterference and cooperation would be beneficial in a region threatened by terrorism, drugs and nuclear weapons.

KABUL (Reuters) - A roadside blast wounded two NATO peacekeepers in northern Afghanistan Thursday, police said, and a Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the explosion in an area in which they do not normally operate."An ISAF vehicle traveling in a convoy was damaged by some sort of explosion," said a spokeswoman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).Two members of the force were lightly wounded, she said.

KABUL (Reuters) - President Hamid Karzai has summoned hundreds of representatives from across Afghanistan for talks that will include the sensitive issue of a strategic partnership with the United States, a presidential official said o­n Thursday.

Seventy people have been killed over the last three days in two clashes in southern Afghanistan, the Afghan and US authorities say.

Fighting in Zabul province left 40 fighters from the Taleban and its allies dead together with o­ne Afghan policemen, the US military says.

And nine Afghan soldiers and 20 insurgents were killed in a clash in Kandahar province, the US says.

They are some of the heaviest clashes since the fall of the Taleban.
